Iotas

My husband likes to tease me, and sometimes he does that by suggesting things I should write about. This week it was, “You should write about iotas.” So I did.

Oh, Word of God, the Father's spoken glory,
oh sweet resounding found in all our days,
tell on, tell on, and finish, Lord, your story.
Let not the least of echoes fade away.

Without your word, your voice within us ringing,
we wander lost; we stumble and we fall.
Keep on, keep on: Set all creation singing,
and draw us ever onward by your call.

Within a world of chaos and illusion,
oh Lord, we lose the clarion of your voice.
Cry on, cry on, to cut through our confusion
and draw us on beyond all empty noise.

Oh, hold the word within in us, Jesus, tightly,
and let not one iota slip away.
Hold on, hold on, that we behold you rightly,
and hold to every syllable you say.

Oh, precious Word, our promise and our treasure,
write every smallest letter in our hearts.
Write on, write on, and let us read forever
the tale of love in which we bear our parts.
