Forget

Forget your covenant, oh Lord; forget
as we have long time since forgotten ours.
Forget, dear God! The burden of our debt,
the payment swollen far beyond our pow'rs.

Remember but as we remember you:
inconstant and convenient to our ways.
But you cannot, Almighty, be untrue,
though truth be slowed by mercy's long delays.

The day will come when debt shall be our doom,
when to the heights we cry out, “Crush us! Fall!”
Forget, oh Lord, or in that rocky tomb
we yet will owe you grace, interest and all!

Oh, Mercy, that cannot itself forget,
remember what you are. Forget our sin!
Forgive the vows unpaid; forgive our debt.
Sound not the trumpet calling debtors in!

And we who've been forgiven much, love much—
at last we love, and lay it at your feet!—
and hope to feel your all-forgiving touch
when we before you stand at mercy's seat.
