O God, You See Our Broken Hearts

Partly based on Psalm 147. Written without a tune in mind, but it fits ERHALT UNS, HERR (“Again We Keep This Solemn Fast”):

 O God, you see our broken hearts;
 you hear our sorrows from afar
 yet do not hold yourself apart
 but come with all the love you are.

 Your arms encompass sun and moon;
 you know the number of the stars,
 yet here you stoop to bind our wounds.
 You know our names and what we are:

A passing breath of want and need,
 and you supply both grace and bread.
 Our bodies on your body feed;
 your Spirit has our spirits fed.

 But still, the strife of earthly pow'rs
 drowns out your voice with clash of war.
 Oh, stay with us! Rebuild our tow'rs!
 Grant peace, that we may bleed no more!

 Come, touch our eyes, that through the fray
 we yet may see your eyes on us.
 Lord, whisper to our hearts the way
 to follow you through smoke and dust.

 In every step that we must go,
 show us the roads that you have gone.
 Our struggles here you lived and know,
 and you will lead us safely home.
